Nancy O'Dell's broadcast career began as a journalist and anchor for WPDE-TV Myrtle Beach in South Carolina. In the following years, she worked as a morning-news anchor as well as a crime reporter at WCBD TV. O'Dell's reporting on the lax responses of police officers to DUI cases in Charleston caused an investigation conducted by the State Law Enforcement Division, that led to a revised direction from the state authorities on DUI cases. Ms. O'Dell received her Best Report of the Award from the Associated Press for South Carolina's media.
